Effectively Managing Water Usage in the Home and Garden

Unfortunately, most of us take for granted that we have a unlimited supply of water at our fingertips whenever we need it. The reality is, water conservation has become an important part of preserving our environment, and is a responsibility each of us should take on. By adding some simple practices to your day to day routines both inside and outside your home, not only can you conserve water, but in most cases, your money as well.

Start by checking your sinks, toilets and appliances for leaks. By simply looking at you meter for an initial reading and again after a two or three hour period while no water is being used, you can tell if you have a leak. If the readings are not exactly the same, start investigating. Since toilets can be a big offender, check for leaks by placing some food coloring in the tank. If the color begins to bleed into the bowl within twenty to thirty minutes, it's leaking and should be repaired. While making the repairs, you can also place a tank bank or weighted plastic bottle in the tank, which will reduce the amount of water used to flush by gallons a day.

Make a conscious effort while grooming. Take shorter showers (consider turning the water off while you soap up), turn off the water while brushing your teeth and fill the sink with water to rinse off your razor while shaving. It it not necessary to keep the water running through these activities.

Be certain to run your dishwasher and washing machine only when you have a full load. Forego rinsing the dishes before placing them in the dishwasher and if washing by hand using a double basin sink, fill one with soapy water and one with water to rinse.

Only water your lawn when it needs it, deep soaking and watering in the early morning or at dusk. Deep soaking will not evaporate as easily and likewise, watering when it's cooler will ensure minimal evaporation. In addition, consider planting drought resistant shrubs and mulch around them, which will help to retain moisture.

Never leave the hose running while washing your car and use your broom to sweep the driveway, not the hose.

By implementing any of these water conservation hints today, you'll be doing your part to help us all - and our environment - in the future.
